Meet the Team

  • Matt Roberts

    Founder

    Responsibilities include all things client engagement/delivery. Matt spent the first 12 years of his career at a Big Four firm, where he helped companies scope, document, calculate, and defend their R&D tax credits, before shifting his focus to startups and the middle market; since then, he has consulted with taxpayers nationwide, served as the lead tax technical expert for a large Series A ventured-backed startup providing R&D services primarily to tech companies, and continues to be recognized as a thought leader in the R&D tax credit field while advising several organizations in that space.

  • Chris Chamness

    Manager, R&D Tax Credits

    Responsibilities include all things client engagement/delivery. Chris also leads the effort to streamline and improve client delivery SOPs, working closely with the internal EPD team to provide input on internal workflow automation and documentation automation capabilities. Chris has 6+ years of experience in the calculation and documentation of R&D tax credits, most recently as Tax Supervisor at a Top 40 accounting firm, where he worked his way up from Tax Associate over more than five years. Chris holds a BBA in Economics from the University of Mississippi and is a licensed Enrolled Agent (EA) with the IRS.

  • Diane Fann

    R&D Tax Credit Advisor

    Responsibilities include leading technical tax credit engagements and assisting clients from initial scoping through final deliverables, including qualified research documentation, wage and expense allocations, and credit calculations. Diane is a California CPA with over six years of experience helping startups and established businesses across a wide range of industries claim federal and state R&D tax incentives.


    Prior to consulting independently, Diane worked at a national tax advisory firm where she managed R&D tax credit studies for companies across various industries. Her experience includes IRC Sections 41 and 174, payroll tax offset elections, and both ASC and Regular credit calculation methodologies.
    Diane is passionate about helping small and medium-sized businesses better understand available tax incentives that can extend their financial runway and support continued innovation.

  • Josie Lorenzo

    UX/UI Designer & Operations Coordinator

    Josie owns the end-to-end UI/UX design of Better Credits' application development, bringing 7+ years of product design experience to the platform. She works primarily in Figma to design high-fidelity mockups, wireframes, prototypes, and user flows, and brings a research-grounded approach to the work — conducting discovery workshops, performing UX audits, and developing user personas and journey maps that inform product decisions.

    Beyond design, Josie contributes to the operational side of the business — supporting client deliverable preparation, documentation, and quality review across R&D tax credit engagements.

  • Tom Burns

    Data Analytics / RPA Lead

    Responsibilities include assisting in data analytics and Robotic Process Automation (“RPA”). Tom is a financial systems and analysis specialist with a background in international accounting. Tom has consistently found opportunities to create process improvements via automation using resources/technologies available. Tom’s specialty is reporting automation with Python, Microsoft Excel, SQL, and Oracle EPBCS, PCMCS, Essbase, and HFM.

  • Craig Smith

    Backend Developer / Product Lead

    Responsibilities include owning the entire BE development of Better Credits’ Expense Automation Analysis Tool (“EAAT”). A methodical yet inventive Software Engineer who produces quality results and enjoys being a central resource for resolving software issues. Expertise includes software design, object-oriented programming languages, compilers, automation and operating systems. Accomplished in Go, C#, .NET, C++, Java, Python, Node, Ruby, Mongo, SQL (many varieties), multithreaded programming, C, and BigData.

    Specialties: Go, C#, Node, UNIX, windows, software architecture, teaching, programming languages, and compilers. I have taught classes in C, C#, and Perl. Craig is also very proficient in spoken German (although it will take me a couple of days to think in German again).

    AI Automation Lead

    Responsibilities include evaluating model performance, architecting AI workflows, and integrating automation pipelines that transform raw financial data into actionable intelligence. Specializing in the selection, deployment, and optimization of AI models, with a focus on constructing agentic systems to automate insights from accounting documents (e.g., general ledgers).
